About Dr. Gupta

Dr. Maya Gupta is a physical oceanographer who studies the powerful forces that shape our planet’s climate. A graduate of the prestigious MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography, her research involves using satellite data and robotic floats to track massive ocean currents like the Gulf Stream. Her work is critical to understanding how heat is transported around the globe and how changes in the ocean can lead to extreme weather events.

She has participated in several research cruises, deploying and recovering scientific instruments in some of the world’s most remote oceans. Dr. Gupta is passionate about making complex climate data accessible and meaningful. For EduEarth4U, she explains the intricate connections between the ocean and our atmosphere, revealing how events happening thousands of miles offshore can affect the weather in our own backyards.

Based in the historic oceanographic community of Woods Hole, she is an avid kayaker and enjoys teaching her two daughters about the local marine environment.

My Writing Philosophy

“The ocean is the engine of our climate system. It’s a vast, complex machine, but it’s not unknowable. My goal is to demystify this engine, to show how heat, salt, and water move on a planetary scale, and to explain why understanding these fundamental processes is one of the most important scientific challenges of our time.”
